Ski Coaching at Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth is not a day trip from Tahoe, and that’s rather the point. It’s a genuine destination mountain with a long season, big vertical and terrain that keeps giving long after most California resorts have gone slushy. If you’re driving that far, it’s worth skiing it properly.

Our Mountain Mentorship days at Mammoth run as multi-day trips with a certified coach. There’s a two-day minimum here, and a week’s notice, both for good reasons we’ll explain.

Why two days minimum

Mammoth is enormous and the conditions change dramatically with elevation and aspect. Day one is usually about learning the mountain and settling in. Day two is when you actually apply what you worked on, on terrain your coach now knows suits you.

Skiing Mammoth for a single coached day is possible in principle, but you’d spend most of it orienting rather than improving. We’d rather tell you that than sell you a day that underdelivers.

Why a week’s notice

Coaches travel to Mammoth rather than living at its base. A seven-day lead lets us get the right coach there, and lets you sort lodging before prices climb. Request a date and we’ll hold it while your coach confirms. Nothing is charged until they do.

What the mountain gives you

A long season

Mammoth regularly runs well into spring and some years into summer. Late-season coaching here is a real option.

Serious vertical

Over 3,000 feet of it, so runs are long enough to actually practise something rather than reaching the bottom mid-thought.

Every kind of terrain

Wide groomers, steep chutes off the top, trees and a well-known park. A mixed group can genuinely all get a good day.

Consistent snow

High elevation and a reliable storm track mean it often holds conditions when lower mountains are struggling.

What it costs

From $600 per day

two-day minimum · covers up to 3 people · 4th guest $400

Pricing works the same as our other mountains. The day starts at $600 and that price covers up to three people, so three of you is $200 each. A fourth guest is $400. Extra-guest fees are charged once per booking, not per day, which matters here because Mammoth is a two-day minimum.

Group Two days Per person
1 skier or rider $1,200 $1,200
2 people $1,200 $600
3 people $1,200 $400
4 people $1,600 $400

For comparison, a single resort private day around Tahoe averages roughly $1,300 for one person. Lift tickets, rentals, lodging and travel are separate and yours to arrange, though we’re happy to point you at what works.

Who it suits

  • Anyone making a proper trip of it. Two or three coached days is the best use of a Mammoth week.
  • Southern California skiers for whom Mammoth is the natural home mountain.
  • Spring skiers. The late season here is excellent and under-appreciated.
  • Groups splitting a coach. Because the fourth-guest fee is charged once rather than per day, three and four people both land at $400 each for two full days.

Looking for ski lessons at Mammoth? Here’s the honest answer

If you searched for ski lessons at Mammoth Mountain, you have two real options and they are not the same thing. It’s worth knowing the difference before you book either.

Mammoth’s own ski school sells formal lessons, private and group, for every level. Formal instruction inside a resort is generally the ski school’s exclusive right, so if what you want is a lesson in the strict sense, that is where you book it. Complete first-timers should go there, and we will tell you so.

A Mountain Mentorship day with us is a different product. You ski the day with a PSIA or AASI certified coach as your host and mentor, on real terrain, with continuous intercom feedback, CARV data and video analysis. It is not a resort lesson and we do not present it as one. What it is, for anyone past their first few days, is usually the better use of a day.

The short version: first time on snow, book Mammoth’s ski school. Everyone else, a coached day will do more for your skiing. Our true private lessons run at Sugar Bowl, which is the one mountain where we are set up to teach them.

Snowboarding at Mammoth

Mammoth is one of the better mountains in California to ride, and our coaches hold AASI snowboard certification alongside PSIA alpine, so a snowboard day here is a full coached day rather than a ski coach improvising.

The terrain is the reason. Mammoth’s park is genuinely well built, the upper mountain has steep open faces that reward a rider who can hold an edge on firm snow, and the long groomers off Chair 2 are ideal for working on carving without running out of hill halfway through the thought. The two-day minimum helps here more than it does on skis, because riders tend to need a session to reset habits before anything new sticks.

Mixed groups where some ski and some ride are completely normal, and they cost the same as any other booking.

Frequently asked questions

How do you give feedback during the day?

Coach and guest are on intercom, so feedback is instant and continuous instead of saved up for the bottom of the run. You can ask a question mid-turn and your coach can answer it there. We also use CARV to measure what your skis are actually doing, which means edge angle, pressure and balance, so the coaching is checked against data rather than impressions.

Do you do video analysis?

Yes, with every guest, and it goes well beyond filming a few turns. Your coach shoots footage through the day and then works through it with you, showing what your body is actually doing versus what it feels like. You keep the video afterwards. All of this is included rather than sold as an add-on.

Can I book just one day?

Not at Mammoth. The two-day minimum exists because a single day here goes mostly on orientation. If you only have one day, Mt Rose or Palisades will serve you better.

How far in advance do I need to book?

At least seven days, and more in peak season. Your coach travels to Mammoth, so the lead time is what makes it work.

Do you help with lodging?

We don’t book it for you, but tell us your dates and we’ll happily suggest areas that make sense for early lifts.

Is late season worth it?

Genuinely yes. Spring at Mammoth is one of the better-kept secrets in California skiing, with soft snow, long days and far smaller crowds.

What if the weather is bad on one of the days?

Two days gives us flexibility that a single day doesn’t. Your coach will work the mountain that’s open, and if a day is genuinely unskiable we’ll sort it out with you.

Snowboarders?

Yes. Our coaches hold AASI certifications alongside PSIA alpine, and mixed groups are welcome.
