Ski Lessons at Heavenly: What Your Options Actually Are
Heavenly is the biggest ski area at Lake Tahoe and the one people most often ski badly. Not because it is difficult, but because it is enormous, it straddles two states, and it is entirely possible to spend a whole day riding the wrong lifts. Here is an honest guide to your lesson options there, including the fact that we do not coach at Heavenly yet.
Heavenly’s own ski school
Heavenly is a Vail Resorts mountain, and its ski and snowboard school runs the full range: group lessons, private lessons, children’s programs and multi-day packages. If you want formal instruction at Heavenly, this is where it comes from. Formal teaching inside a resort is generally the ski school’s exclusive right, so there is no independent alternative for a lesson in the strict sense.
A few things worth knowing before you book:
- Book early, and online. Vail mountains price lessons dynamically and the walk-up rate on a holiday weekend is the worst price on the hill.
- Lift tickets are separate unless the package says otherwise, and Heavenly tickets are among the more expensive at Tahoe.
- There are two base areas, California and Nevada, plus the gondola from South Lake Tahoe. Check which one your lesson meets at. People get this wrong and lose an hour.
- Group lessons are genuinely fine for a first-timer. If you have never clicked into a binding, a group lesson at Heavenly will do the job and costs a fraction of a private.
Why Heavenly specifically is hard to ski well
This is the part most lesson pages skip, and it matters more here than at any other Tahoe mountain.
The scale works against you. Heavenly covers around 4,800 acres across two states. The runs that look close together on the map can be twenty minutes and three lifts apart in practice. A day spent working that out is a day not spent skiing.
The aspects behave very differently. The California side and the Nevada side get different sun and different wind. On the same afternoon one can be soft and the other scraped. Knowing which is which on a given day is local knowledge, not technique.
The views are a genuine distraction. That is not a joke. The lake views from the upper mountain are the best in the sport and people ski worse while looking at them.
None of that is fixed by instruction. It is fixed by skiing with someone who knows the mountain, which is a different service.
Where we fit, honestly: not yet
We do not coach at Heavenly today. We are working on it for the 2026/27 season, and Heavenly is the mountain we hear asked for most.
What we would bring is our Mountain Mentorship format rather than a lesson: a full day skiing with a PSIA or AASI certified coach as your host, with continuous intercom feedback while you ski, CARV measuring what your skis are actually doing, and video analysis you keep afterwards. One price covers up to three people, so a family shares a coach rather than being split into classes.
On a mountain the size of Heavenly, the “host who knows the place” half of that is worth as much as the coaching half.

Where we coach right now

Mt Rose is the closest of those to Heavenly in spirit: quick to reach, high base elevation, and the only one you can book on a Friday night for Saturday morning. It is about an hour and a quarter round the lake.

How much are ski lessons at Heavenly?

Is Heavenly good for beginners?
Yes, with a caveat. The learning terrain is perfectly good, but the mountain’s size means getting to and from it eats time. First-timers often have a smoother day at a smaller mountain. Sugar Bowl, where we teach true private lessons, is a gentler introduction.
What is the difference between a lesson and Mountain Mentorship?
A lesson is formal instruction, which inside a resort is the ski school’s exclusive right. Mountain Mentorship is a full day skiing with a certified coach as your host and mentor, with feedback throughout, on real terrain. For a genuine first-timer a lesson is the right call. For most other people a coached day does more.
Which side of Heavenly should I ski?
It depends on the day rather than on preference. The California side generally holds softer snow in the morning; the Nevada side often skis better in the afternoon, and its groomers are quieter. On a windy day the answer changes completely. This is exactly the kind of thing a local coach saves you from guessing.
Do you coach snowboarders?
Yes. Our coaches hold AASI snowboard certification alongside PSIA alpine, and mixed groups where some ski and some ride are normal.
